Dolphins: Writing Inspired by The Arrival

In Year 5, we have been using Shaun Tan’s The Arrival as a stimulus for our writing. The story is about a father who makes the difficult decision to leave his wife and daughter in a dangerous country to find a new home in a new place. He leaves them behind whilst he travels to another country to find a safe place to live, a job and a home.

Here, the children are writing letters or diaries to communicate their feelings as the father, leaving their family behind.

Mr Pearce has a book for kids out: The Curse of the Maya

Hello everyone! Just to let you know that Mr Pearce and one of his former colleagues from a previous school have written a book together, which has now been published and is available for you. The project has taken a couple of years but has finally arrived. The book had been finished before Mr Pearce went away for his treatment and has been going through the editing and proofing process, which has now finished and the book is available. Kensuke’s Kingdom Trailer by Phoebe, Connor, Miley & Angel

Year 5 have been working on their Computing skills to create a video trailer from Powerpoint based on a book they have been studying in Guided Reading and Writing.

They have combined using Powerpoint with images and audio (as well as text effects and so on), working out the timings for each slide so that they run seamlessly together.

School Dresses Like Mr Pearce for Charity

As many of you will know, Year 5 teacher, Mr Pearce, was recently diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. For this type of MS, there is no treatment available on the NHS (apart from in one London hospital for which he will not qualify). As a result, he is getting stem cell treatment in Russia. He has been fundraising in order to do this. The school have done their bit to help out here. One event was a dress like Mr Pearce day, and it was a lot of fun. There were flat caps, waist coats and sideburns all over the school. Here are some staff pictures to have a laugh at.
